Ingredients

  • 1 lb 450g fresh button mushrooms
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 large eggs beaten
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs preferably panko
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • ½ cup smoky BBQ sauce store-bought or homemade
  • 1 tbsp honey optional, for extra sweetness

Instructions

  • Prepare the mushrooms: Clean the mushrooms by wiping them with a damp cloth. Remove stems and set aside.
  • Coat the mushrooms: In a shallow bowl, combine flour, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. In another bowl, beat the eggs. In a third bowl, place the breadcrumbs.
  • Dredge the mushrooms: Dip each mushroom in the flour mixture, followed by the beaten eggs, and then coat with breadcrumbs.
  • Fry the mushrooms: Heat oil in a frying pan over medium-high heat. Fry the mushrooms in batches for 3-4 minutes until golden and crispy. Transfer to paper towels to drain excess oil.
  • Prepare the sauce: In a small bowl, combine BBQ sauce and honey (if using). Stir until smooth.
  • Serve: Drizzle the smoky BBQ sauce over the fried mushrooms or serve it on the side for dipping.

Notes

  • If you prefer a spicier kick, add a dash of cayenne pepper to the flour mixture or BBQ sauce.
  • For a healthier version, you can bake the mushrooms at 400°F (200°C) for 15-20 minutes instead of frying.
